History

West Millbrook Middle School, constructed in 1976, is part of the Wake County Public School System. The system growing rapidly, with a student population that has doubled since 1985.  It is the second largest school system in North Carolina and the 24th largest in the nation. The county-wide school system consists of 132 schools: 84 elementary, 28 middle schools, 17 high schools and 3 special/optional schools. These schools house over 114,000 students and are served by almost 14,000 full-time employees.

The Wake County Public School System is rapidly growing. Since the early 90's, the district has grown an average of 3000 students each year. The school system is building new schools to meet this increased enrollment. It was recently recognized by Money magazine as one of the "Top 100 School Systems in towns that you can afford."

Today

West Millbrook Middle School is located in the northern section of the capital city of Raleigh, North Carolina (known as the Triangle area) and serves students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. The 40-acre campus consists of eight separated buildings, plus several mobile classrooms.   Six of the buildings have have been renovated in recent years, and the remaining two are scheduled for updates shortly.

In addition to a traditional education program, West Millbrook offers various special education programs. There are special programs for students identified as Academically Gifted, Behaviorally and Emotionally Handicapped, Autistic, Learning Disabled, and Limited English Proficient. Special assistance is also provided for students identified with cross-categorical special needs.

Outside of these academic programs, West Millbrook students have opportunities to participate in a wide variety of sports and clubs that focus on enriching the students' middle school experience and preparing them for life beyond adolescence.

The certified staff consists of a principal, three assistant principals, three guidance counselors, two media specialists, a technology facilitator, and an instructional staff of 70 teachers and assistants. Approximately one fourth of the faculty hold Master's degrees in their assigned fields and several hold National Board Certifications.
