Mr. Derek Currie
Teacher of the Year 2009-10
Please join us in congratulating Mr. Derek Currie, 8th Grade Math and Algebra teacher. He was recently chosen the WMMS Teacher of the Year by WMMS faculty. Mr. Currie came to West Millbrook through the Visiting International Faculty program in 2005 and has challenged 8th grade students to do their best and reach their potential on both the Sharks and Eagles teams since then.
Mr. Currie's background is interesting. We asked him to share a little about himself with the school community. He writes:
I grew up in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island. After High School graduation (1995) I went on to Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1999 and Bachelor of Education in 2001. I taught Middle and High School Math in Antigonish during my practice teaching. After graduation I took a job with the VIF program (Visiting International Faculty) in Mebane, North Carolina for what I thought would be one year. Once I realized you do not have snow for months on end in North Carolina each year, one year quickly turned to 3 years. After my 3 year working visa expired I decided that Asia would be my next stop. I moved to Seoul, South Korea and taught there for 1 year. Once that one year was over I came back to North Carolina because my girlfriend, now wife, Shannon was back here. I rejoined the VIF program in 2005 and arrived at West Millbrook Middle. I have been here 5 years now, with no plans of moving around anymore, so you're all stuck with me!!
Former students say that he is a great teacher who demands much and cares equally as much. Our faculty and staff agrees!
