Millbrook Middle School Dear Career Day Speaker: Thank you for volunteering to share your professional experience and career information with our students at West Millbrook Middle School! Career Day is a coordinated effort between our Faculty, PTA and the West Millbrook Business Alliance. We are proud that it has been an integral part of our curriculum at West Millbrook Middle School for thirteen years. Our goal is to provide our students with speakers who are excited about what they do and will help our students start to see all the wonderful future possibilities that education creates for them. Our award-winning program has been successful over the years because of wonderful people such as you who generously donate time. We are truly grateful for your participation. Career Day is Tuesday, February 12, 2008. Please come directly to the Media Center at 8:00 AM for registration. Suggested parking areas and the most direct walking route to the Media Center are indicated on the linked map. A light breakfast will be available before a member of our Beta Club escorts you to your first classroom. Your presentations will begin at roughly 8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 10:30 a.m. Your registration packet will contain a more detailed map of the campus along with the specific directions to where you will be speaking. If you have any questions while on campus, please feel free to ask any of our faculty members or return to the registration area in the Media Center. Please call us immediately if you must cancel due to an emergency or unforeseen circumstance. We need as much time as possible to replace you on the schedule. If calling before February 12, please call Tricia McGlynn at 518-0111. If you are running late, or must cancel on the morning of February 12, please call 601-8030 or 518-0111. We recommend you prepare for a 45 minute presentation, followed by time for questions. Your talk should include information regarding your educational background and any special training and skills needed for your particular career. Tell the students how you arrived on your chosen career path. Point out how successful students and successful adults share many of the same skills, character traits and good work habits. Be prepared for questions about salary. If you are comfortable discussing salary, we suggest you give them more of a “possible salary range” for your job type instead of getting into specifics. Click here to link to an outline that may assist you in preparing your presentation. Middle School aged students respond well to handouts, visual aids, hands-on activities, props, and anything that keeps them actively involved in the presentation, however, we ask that you use good judgment to insure that all items used are in good taste and appropriate for an audience of 11-14 year olds. Please let us know in advance if you will be sending anything home with the children, so that our administration can approve it for distribution. We also need to know in advance if you will have any audio-visual needs. In most cases, we can provide VCR's, TV's, and overhead projectors. We encourage you to bring your own computer and projection equipment due to the difficulty of matching needs and equipment. You must call ahead to reserve this equipment. We
are looking forward to seeing you on February 12! Please
call us if you have any questions. In case of snow, Career Day will
be
rescheduled
for Friday, March 14. PTA Career Day Committee Speaker
