What Would itTake for Me to Survive on My Own?

Step One - Food:

  • Work with your computer buddy, and pretend that you are siblings.
  • Make a grocery list for one week of food.
  • Remember that Mary Call and the Luther children had almost no money.
  • You must assume that you do not have much money either, so plan simple meals that you make from "scratch." (In other words, you should not purchase frozen dinners or other luxury foods.)
  • Remember what you have learned about nutrition. Plan to purchase inexpensive items from all food groups, but keep in mind that beans and rice combines to make the same kind of protein that you find in meat and is MUCH less expensive.
  • Remember: Your goal is to spend as little money as possible, and still have enough food to feed you and your siblings.
  • Also remember that you need to be careful about purchasing in large quantities. While it is often less expensive per ounce if you buy larger quantities, if the item will spoil if not used quickly, you should plan to buy smaller amounts.
